YOU & I

Screenings and installation details

YOU & I (3mins/sound photos/ 2000)

A photograph and a memory.

This is the first of several pieces made with the same set of photographs found in a charity shop in East London in the early 1990’s. They show a husband and wife, Rene & Bill (sometimes with their friend Janet) on their holidays and trips around England and Scotland in the 1970’s. Their names were written on the back of each photograph with descriptions of where they visited. The way they photographed each other in the same position in each place is highlighted in this piece. What does it say about how we mark our own journeys through life? Who are we marking them for? Ourselves or others? In You & I, Rene & Bill’s lives are re-imagined through their own photographs of themselves and in this way we can see a version of ourselves.

The sound track was recorded in Bremen, Germany in 1994. When the piano teacher wasn’t home the artist would spend hours picking up melodies from the north German air. At this time she did not have access to film or video equipment but when she started to teach at The University of Greenwich, Media Department in 1999, she borrowed a scanner and a video camera and made this piece.
